چکیده

In Part 1 of this paper a model was developed to describe the formation mechanisms and dynamic behavior of cutting fluid mist. This part of the paper focuses on an experimental investigation of the mist generated by the interaction of the fluid with the rotating cylindrical workpiece during a turning operation and the simulation of the dynamic behavior of the mist droplets, resulting in the prediction of the droplet size distribution and the mass concentration within the machining environment. These simulation results are compared to experimental measurements in order to validate the theoretical model presented in Part 1 of the paper. It is observed that the model predictions accurately characterize the observed experimental behavior. @DOI: 10.1115/1.1765151#

Character and Behavior of Mist Generated by Application of Cutting Fluid to a Rotating Cylindrical Workpiece, Part 1: Model Development

Increasing attention is being devoted to the airborne emissions resulting from a variety of manufacturing processes because of health, safety, and environmental concerns. In this two-part paper, a model is presented for the amount of cutting fluid mist produced by the interaction of the fluid with the rotating cylindrical workpiece during a turning operation. This model is based on relationship...

Mechanisms of Metalworking Fluids Aerosols Formation

Utilization of metalworking fluids in the technological process of metalworking brings its advantages and disadvantages, mainly associated with the contamination of the working air through cutting fluid mist. The primary aim of this article is to approximate the mechanism of aerosols generation which contaminates the working air and to draw the attention to the problem of quantification of gene...

Determination of Diametral Error Using Finite Elements and Experimental Method

Many manufacturing defects could be seen in cylindrical turning. Some of these defects are: elastic deformation of work-piece, nonlinear backlash of cutting set – machine – workpiece, unknown geometry of untreated part, thermal deformations, vibration of set and machine. Deflection of workpiece under cutting forces will cause different levels of processing of workpiece 1 . Nonlinear backlash of...

A new approach to enhance final surface quality in drilling operation: evaluation of using alumina micro-particle additives on oil-water emulsion cutting fluid

Reaming is a common finishing process for improving the drilled holes surface quality. Choosing an appropriate finishing method in drilling process has a significant effect on the surface quality of holes and in decreasing the process total cost and time. In this study, four similar holes were drilled on the AISI 4340 workpiece with different two pair feed rates. The drilling process was perfor...

Effect of Magnetic Field on the Rotating Flow in a Similar Czochralski Configuration

We present a numerical study of the rotating flow generated by two rotating disks in co-/counter-rotating, inside a fixed cylindrical enclosure similar to the Czochralski configuration (Cz).  The enclosure having an aspect ratio A = H/Rc equal to 2, filled with a low Prandtl number fluid (Pr = 0.011), which is submitted to a vertical temperature gradient. The finite volume method has been used ...
